What Does Authentic Mean Anyway?
I must say hockey jerseys are a pretty weird scam. Teams sell jerseys they call “authentic,” but those jerseys are not the ones the players wear on ice. Occasionally, those “Made in Canada” jerseys that can cost up to twice as much are made available, but this begs the question, what’s “authentic” about the jerseys of still-inferior quality that the team doesn’t wear?
I mean, I get it, the real on-ice jerseys are expensive, and I like that fans don’t have to shell out big bucks to have a jersey that displays their fandom at a lesser price point. However, I think the terminology is deceptive if you call something authentic without explaining that by this you mean it looks like the thing the team wears but isn’t. Especially for the fan for whom the more expensive item is a big ticket purchase, why not be forthcoming about what they’re buying instead of likely deceiving them?
